Volcanic Ash from the Island of La Palma, Spain: An Experimental Study to Establish Their Properties as Pozzolans

The eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on 19 September 2021, resulted in deposition large quantities volcanic ash (VA), causing a great impact citizens. This work aims to study properties this as pozzolanic raw materials establish their potential use development sustainable cement. Results chemical and technical characterization are presented. To achieve goal, Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) was replaced with standardized percentages OPC/VA: 10, 25, 40%. Characterization studies were carried out using analysis X-ray fluorescence (XRF), quality (QCA), pozzolanicity test (PT) at 8 15 days, well determining mechanical strength (MS) 7, 28, 90 days. results obtained by XRF QCA established that composition VA corresponds natural pozzolan typical pyroclastic genesis. PT showed analyzed samples have marked nature, both showing significant increase hydraulic reactivity. Likewise, MS tests confirmed continuous compressive strength, which increased significantly from 7 days curing, reaching more than 58 MPa. On other hand, three types dosages used 40% equally effective, OPC/VA formulations: 10–25% being most effective. research could be local industries guide for correct island, manufacture construction materials, such aggregates, produce cement low CO2 emissions, thus having positive environment. Finally, availability VAs surrounding areas La Palma cover part needs restoration houses infrastructures damaged during eruption.
